Widespread rainfall across Ernakulam district

Kochi City received nearly 7cm of rainfall between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Monday. Weather station at Kochi naval base recorded 69mm (6.9cm) rain. Widespread rainfall was reported across the district which was on red alert on Monday. A fifth standard student was injured after a tree branch fell over him at St Albert’s school ground. The student, Alen, son of Siju, of Bolgatty, was rushed to a private hospital and his condition is stated to be stable. Waterlogging was reported in Ernakulam KSRTC depot and nearby areas, and Kalabhavan Road behind Ernakulam Town Hall. To the relief of city residents, no waterlogging was reported along MG Road and adjacent areas. Sea erosion and subsequent waterlogging was reported in the coastal area of Ernakulam. Meanwhile, district collector NSK Umesh on Monday issued directives to various government departments to take precautions in view of rain getting intensified in Ernakulam. Tahsildars have been directed to constitute squads in respective control rooms and ensure availability of vehicles. Forest department and DTPC should take steps to restrict tourism activities in waterbodies and high ranges. KSEB has been asked to open a control room to prevent any electrocution related incidents in view of power poles getting damaged and tree branches falling. Meanwhile, trees uprooted in around 25 places in the district. Vehicles got damaged after trees got uprooted and fell on vehicles at Piravom, Pattimattom and Panampilly Nagar. Tree falls onto school bldg, tragedy averted. Tripunithura: Students of the Government Model Nursery School, Tripunithura, had a narrow escape as a tree got uprooted on Monday during the heavy rain and slanted onto the school building. Officials said the incident occurred around 3.30pm. Around 62 children in the age group of 3 to 5 were reportedly in the classrooms when the incident occurred. The schools’ PTA president M J Babu said the students panicked hearing the sound of the tree falling and ran towards the office room. Officials said the tree would be cut with the help of fire force officials on Tuesday.
