Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir received a fresh spell of snowfall late on Monday as the national weather agency predicted light to moderate rainfall with thunder lightning and gusty winds in northwestern India, including J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, in the coming weeks.

During the next seven days, Gujarat and parts of central India are likely to see a 2-4°C rise in temperature while eastern India and Maharashtra may see a 2-3°C rise, the India Meteorological Department said in a press release on Tuesday. “A Western Disturbance as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies runs roughly along Long. 68°E to the north of Lat. 32°N. Another fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Northwest India from 18th April, 2024,” it said.

Due to this, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may see light to moderate rainfall or snowfall with thunderstorms, lightning and winds between April 18 and 21, it said. Meanwhile, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are likely to see isolated to scattered rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds during the same period.

The release also said that an isolated hailstorm is very likely over J&K, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh on April 18 and Uttarakhand on April 18 and 19. In eastern India, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya are likely to see thunderstorms and lightning between April 16 and 22. In southern India, Kerala and Mahe are likely to see rains on April 18 and 19, it added. In other news, hot and humid weather is very likely to prevail over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and Rayalaseema between April 16 and 18, and the Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Konkan and Goa, coastal areas of Gujarat and coastal Karnataka on April 16.

In other news, hot and humid weather is very likely to prevail over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and Rayalaseema between April 16 and 18.
