Jonas Buhl Bjerre lost four games to Javokhir Sindarov in the title clash of Global Chess League in Dubai on Sunday. But he beat his Uzbek slayer when it mattered most to win the title for Triveni Continental Kings in the fourth sudden death game against U Mumba Masters. The unpredictability and inaccuracy - the USPs of this format - came to the fore when Sindarov missed getting mated in one move in the decider when pressing for a win in the mutual time scramble.
The rapid part (15 minutes plus 10 seconds) ended with two sets shared and the blitz part (3 minutes plus two seconds) was also shared. The inaugural FIDE-backed league saw strong teams of Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen not making it to the finale. The prize money was $500,000 for winners and $250,000 for the runners-up. The stage was set for the sudden death blitz games after teams with black pieces won a set each in the regular blitz by winning three games.
