The student strength of the government high school at Addagal in Mandikal hobli of Chikkaballapur taluk has more than doubled in three years, thanks to the efforts of a mathematics teacher. He spends Rs 12,000 every month to provide transport facilities to nearly 40 students. The school had 50 students on its rolls three years ago. Its teachers conducted a survey in neighbouring villages and found that not many children were enrolling in their institution as there was no proper transport facility to Addagal from about seven villages, including Bandahalli, Pillagundlahalli, Shettygere, and Goramidlahalli. During admission time, the teachers urged parents at these villages to admit their wards to the school andpromised to arrange proper transport facilities. The maths teacher from the school, who didn’t want to be identified, took it upon himself to keep the promise. He first arranged for an autorickshaw to pick up and drop students and once the numbers rose, he got a big tempo to ferry the kids.
After three years, there are 132students on the school rolls. Munikrishna, a member of the school development and monitoring committee from Goramidlahalli village, whose daughter is studying in class 9 at the school, said since there was no proper transport, many villagers would discontinue studies of their wards, but thanks to the maths teacher, nearly 25 girls are pursuing studies. Munikrishna said the SDMC is trying to find a philanthropist who can donate a bus to the school so that more students are admitted. He said several representations were made to the authorities to provide a bus service to suit the school timings, but there has been no response so far. The maths teacher said he has raised the issue with newly elected Chikkaballapur legislator Pradeep Eshwar, who has promised to take measures to provide a KSRTC bus service to suit the school timings.
