Inhumanity in Sidhi district

Police on Wednesday arrested the man who was seen urinating on the face of a tribal man in Sidhi area of Madhya Pradesh in a viral video. The accused, Pravesh Shukla, was arrested at around 2.30am from the outskirts of his native village Kubri. “The accused has been taken in custody and is being interrogated," said an official. A disturbing video of the man urinating on the tribal man’s face, while nonchalantly smoking a cigarette, went viral on Tuesday, sparking outrage across the country and triggering political turmoil in the poll-bound state. Police had filed an FIR against the accused, Pravesh Shukla on Tuesday under SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.

ArrestPraveshShukla was trending within hours. Congress leaders and several social media users said Pravesh is the representative of Sidhi BJP MLA Kedarnath Shukla, but the lawmaker denied this. When TOI contacted the MLA, he even avoided giving a comment on the matter, saying he “doesn’t have details”. A police officer confirmed that the victim is from a Scheduled Tribe (ST). Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, “I have instructed the administration to arrest the accused, take strict action and impose NSA against him.” PCC chief Kamal Nath called it a “heinous act” and an “embarrassment for the state”. Former CM Kamal Nath tweeted, “A video of brutality has surfaced in Sidhi district. Such a heinous act on a youth from a tribal community has no place in civil society.” “It is alleged that the accused is associated with BJP. Madhya Pradesh is already number one in atrocities against tribals. I demand from the chief minister that the accused be given the strictest punishment and atrocities on tribals in Madhya Pradesh should be brought to an end,” he tweeted. Both the accused and the victim are from Kubri village in the Bahri region of Sidhi, which is located approximately 650km from Bhopal. It is believed that the incident took place there. DIG-Rewa Mithlesh Shukla said, “A case has been registered against the accused under SC/ST (Prevention Of Atrocities) Act and other relevant sections.” BJP MLA Kedarnath Shukla denied any association with the accused. “He is neither my representative nor is he any office bearer or even a member of the party,” Shukla said. Asked about pictures and posters, including one where the accused claims to be his ‘representative’, the MLA said, “I am a public representative thus it is possible (that there will be photos).” Asked to comment on the barbaric incident, Shukla said, “I am yet to get details of the incident. I’ve only come to know about it from mediapersons.” Later, he condemned the incident and demanded action. He denied prior knowledge of the incident or that the video had been shown to him earlier.

A case has been registered against the accused under SC/ST (Prevention Of Atrocities) Act and other relevant sections.

Both the accused and the victim are from Kubri village in the Bahri region of Sidhi, which is located approximately 650km from Bhopal. It is believed that the incident took place there.
