Antop Hill police station filed an FIR

Bombay high court on Monday was informed the Antop Hill police station on Saturday filed an FIR against its former senior police inspector, Nasir Kulkarni, and other unnamed police personnel for allegedly assaulting and beating up a young woman lawyer, Sadhana Yadav, and her colleague, Harikesh Sharma, at the police station premises in May. Noting that the allegations were “serious”, the HC bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Gauri Godse had last month directed Matunga division police to “impartially investigate” the complaint which deputy police commissioner (DCP) Prashant Kadam said was transferred to Matunga police from Antop Hill. The lawyer duo sought a transfer to any central agency for a fair probe, alleging the “conspiracy” behind the allegedly brutal, unprovoked and unwarranted attack with belts and fists, after being “dragged” needs to be revealed. In her complaint, the female lawyer said she was subjected to “physical assault and threats” while seeking assistance from the police.

On Monday, though, the additional public prosecutor said Antop Hill police had lodged the FIR and invoked the Indian Penal Code’s sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation). The lawyers’ counsel, Uday Warunjikar and Vinay Rathi, appeared, and the HC said the FIR copy be given to them and adjourned the matter to next Monday. “Based on the complainant’s application we have booked Kulkarni and others in the case,” said an officer. Yadav had informed HC Kulkarni was retiring on June 30 and thus wanted the probe expedited.
