The no-confidence motion, filed by 32 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors with support from councillors of other parties, against the Congress mayor in the municipal corporation in Moga, was passed on Tuesday. he 41 councillors led by AAP Moga MLA Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora voted in favour of the no-confidence motion while the sitting mayor Nikita Bhalla could get only 6 votes besides her in a House of 50 members. Two councillors were absent. The 42 councillors had moved the no-confidence motion against the mayor on June 7. Initially, AAP had won only 3 seats in the February 2021 elections. However, in the last 14 months, an additional 29 councillors have joined AAP, thereby increasing its strength to 32. Furthermore, 10 more councillors extended their support to the motion.
Now, the AAP will choose one of the 32 councillors to be appointed as mayor. Dr Amandeep Arora said that the development in Moga had come to a standstill now as the 42 councillors have joined hands, the overall development will be ensured. It is being said that the party high command will review the merits of every councillor, and the final decision will be taken in consultation with the local MLA. Outgoing mayor Nikita Bhalla said that though the Congress may be considered down in this election, they are not out. "The party will come out stronger again," she said.
