The dwindling of primary schools at Canacona is not a recent phenomenon, as records indicate that over the past 33 years, 23 government primary schools have closed owing to low enrollment. The figures were confirmed by the director of education. Most of these school buildings were subsequently used by the health department in the public interest. The department maintains these buildings. However, the school buildings at Delem, Shisheval, Tamnem, Borus, Chiplem, and Kindlem are in a state of disrepair since there were no takers for them.
But the buildings of some erstwhile schools are in good condition. These include the buildings at Agonda, Morkud, Tanshi, Sheli, Loliem, and Gaal. When a building is taken from one government department by another, the latter department is responsible for the building's upkeep. It is learnt that the government primary school's building at Sheli has been handed over to the department of environment, while the one at Morkud has been handed over to the child development project officer. A source at the assistant district education inspector's office at Chaudi said that even if just three children study at a school, the authorities cannot close it. However, if the parents wish to shift their children, the school will shut and the kids will be given admission at a neighbouring school.
