Poochiyappan (Manikkam) is an old Dalit man whose son and daughter-in-law was murdered for eating beef. He raises his grandson Kumaresan single-handedly and wishes for him to become a powerful man. On the other hand, Poochiyappan runs a lot of errands for Vellaiyan, who is a dominant caste person, to earn more money.
Seththumaan - 2022 Indian Tamil-language drama
One fine day, Vellaiyan wishes to eat Seththumaan (refers to pork or pig meat), and orders Poochiyappan to get things ready for it. How does this decision affect Poochi and Kumaresan? This is the basic plot of the Seththumaan movie.
Seththumaan is a movie that has a strong political message.
- It is the year 2017 and Dalit lawyer Ramnath Kovind has just been elected to the presidency, flaring up the age-old caste issues in the country. In a small Tamilian village lives Poochiyappa (Manickam), a lower caste basket maker who hopes for a better future for the orphaned Kumaresan (Ashwin).
- The old man works for a moody landlord called Vellappayan (Suruli), who develops a sudden craving for pork and orders Poochiyappa and the pig rearer Rangan to arrange for a pig, and cook it for the master.
- However, the activity could not only hurt the religious sentiments of the community, but could invite cast-based slurs, and even violence against the poor men. Meanwhile, Poochiyappa’s bond with Kumaresan grows tighter than ever.
- Seththumaan is based on the short story "Varugari" (Fried Meat) by renowned writer Perumal Murugan, who has also written the screenplay for the film.
Gentle basket seller Poochiyappa has big dreams of social mobility for his grandson, Kumaresan, whose parents died years ago in a caste riot that shook their village. When Vellaiyan, Poochi's beneficent but easily ruffled landlord, instructs him to find a choice pig-or "seththumaan", whose meat is fetishized among local gourmands, or denigrated by caste conservatives-Poochi and little Kumaresan get busy. However, once pork and drink go down, tempers flare up, and Poochi must avoid getting caught up in the acerbic hostilities that consume his dominant caste overlords.
